How to Read Your Own Kundli in 10 Minutes (Even If You’re a Total Beginner)

Let me guess. You’ve been staring at your kundli for the last 20 minutes, and it looks like a math homework page designed by someone who hates you.

Squares. Numbers. Roman digits. Weird abbreviations like “Ke” and “Ra.” Lines crisscrossing like a Mumbai local train map.

You’re not alone. I’ve been there. Most people open their kundli with excitement and close it 5 minutes later in total confusion.

Here’s the truth nobody tells you — reading your own kundli isn’t rocket science. You don’t need 10 years of Sanskrit study or a guru sitting in a Himalayan cave.

You need 10 minutes, this guide, and a free kundli generated on your phone. That’s it.

Let’s go step by step. Right now.

Step 1: Get Your Kundli Generated First

Before you can read it, you need it. Generate your free Vedic kundli at:

WebsiteBest For
AstroSage.comMost detailed, very accurate — best overall
Astro-Vision.comClean interface, good for beginners
Prokerala.comSimple and fast

You’ll need three things:

  • Your exact date of birth
  • Your exact time of birth (from birth certificate or family records)
  • Your place of birth (city level is fine)
⚠️ No birth time? Use 6:00 AM as a rough placeholder — but know that your ascendant and house positions won’t be accurate. Try to get the exact time from your birth certificate or family records — it makes a significant difference.

Step 2: Find Your Lagna (Ascendant)

The first house is your starting point — and it’s marked clearly in every kundli. In a North Indian chart, the top-center diamond is House 1. In a South Indian chart, the top-left box is House 1.

Inside House 1, you’ll see a number from 1–12. That number tells you which zodiac sign is your Lagna:

NumberSign (English)Sign (Hindi)
1AriesMesh
2TaurusVrishabh
3GeminiMithun
4CancerKark
5LeoSimha
6VirgoKanya
7LibraTula
8ScorpioVrishchik
9SagittariusDhanu
10CapricornMakar
11AquariusKumbh
12PiscesMeen

Your Lagna sign shapes your physical body, personality projection, and how the world sees you on first meeting.

Step 3: Locate Your Moon (Chandra)

Find where “Mo” or “Chandra” is placed in your chart. The house number where the Moon sits is your Moon house — and the sign number in that house is your Moon sign (Rashi).

This is your emotional core. Your instincts. Your mind.

Moon in House 1? You’re emotionally expressive and intuitive.
Moon in House 4? Deep attachment to home and family.
Moon in House 10? Career-driven emotions, need for public recognition.

Step 4: Find Your Current Dasha Period

Every kundli report includes a Dasha table — a timeline of planetary periods. Look for “Current Dasha” or “Mahadasha” in your generated report.

This tells you which planet’s energy is dominant in your life right now. If you’re in your Saturn Dasha, expect discipline, delays, and deep karmic lessons. If you’re in Jupiter Dasha, expansion, wisdom, and blessings are the theme.

Knowing your current Dasha explains a LOT about why your life feels the way it does right now.

💡 Quick Tip: To find your current Mahadasha, go to AstroSage.com → Generate Free Kundli → Look for the “Dasha” section. That one line will give your entire life’s timing context.

Step 5: Read the 4 Key Houses

Instead of reading all 12 houses at once (overwhelming), focus on these four first:

HouseLife AreaExample Planet Interpretation
House 1 (Lagna)You, your body, your personalityJupiter here = naturally wise, optimistic presence
House 2Family, wealth, speechJupiter here = financial blessings. Mars here = sharp, direct speech
House 7Marriage, partnerships, businessMars here = passionate but combative relationships
House 10Career, reputation, public lifeSaturn here = success through hard work and delays — but lasting
✅ Pro Tip: Check which planets sit in each of these houses. A strong Jupiter in House 2? Financial blessings. Mars in House 7? Passionate but combative relationships. Saturn in House 10? Career success through hard work and delays — but lasting.

Step 6: Identify Your Strongest Planet (Atmakaraka)

Your Atmakaraka — the planet with the highest degree in your chart — represents your soul’s desire in this lifetime. It’s like your life’s chief minister.

You’ll find degrees listed next to each planet (e.g., “Su 14°32′” means Sun at 14 degrees 32 minutes). The planet with the highest degree number (between 0–30°) is your Atmakaraka.

Atmakaraka PlanetSoul’s Core Desire This Lifetime
☀️ SunYour soul craves recognition, authority, and self-expression
♀️ VenusYour soul craves beauty, love, and artistic fulfillment
♄ SaturnYour soul is here to master patience, service, and discipline
♃ JupiterYour soul craves wisdom, teaching, and spiritual growth
🌙 MoonYour soul craves deep emotional connection and nurturing
♂️ MarsYour soul craves courage, conquest, and passionate action
☿ MercuryYour soul craves intelligence, communication, and mastery of knowledge

What You Now Know

In just these six steps, you’ve learned to extract the most important information from your kundli:

  • Your Lagna — how you show up in the world
  • Your Moon sign — your emotional nature
  • Your current Dasha — the energy ruling your life phase
  • Your four key houses — the pillars of your life
  • Your Atmakaraka — your soul’s deepest desire

This isn’t everything Vedic astrology has to offer — that would take years. But this is enough to start having real conversations with your own chart. Enough to recognize patterns. Enough to understand why certain life phases feel the way they do.

The best part? Once you read your own chart, you’ll start reading everyone else’s too — and suddenly your relationships, your family dynamics, and even your history make a new kind of sense.

💬 Which step surprised you the most? Tell me in the comments — and share your Lagna sign. I’d love to see the diversity in this community! 🙏
